The Cork Cover for RION Chair

The cork cover for this chair was created during a contest. The Associação de Designers do Sul, an association of designers and craftsmen in Portugal, organised a contest in collaboration with the restaurant Tertúlia Algarvia. The contest was about creating 100 covers for these chairs owned by the restaurant.
The chairs are named “Rion” and were designed in 2012 by Andrea Radice and Folco Orlandini, two Italian designer. The requirement for the covers was to use a natural material from the Algarve region in Portugal.
My idea of cork cover was selected. I chose this regional and sustainable material because it has enough flexibility to adapt to the shape of the chair. The cork also provides softness and a comfortable feeling and since it is impermeable it is easy to clean and also offer durability which were essential requirements for the restaurant.
After testing and optimising the handcrafted cork cover prototype I produce the 100 covers for the chairs with the help of CNC machine using cork from Amorim.
